I have recently moved away from the inner city to live in the suburbs. Our back gate opens onto a large public park that is wonderful for walking our small dog, watching people play sports, and talking to neighbours. I enjoy all the trees, the birds and their calls, and the small stream that runs through it which can become a river near to overflowing after a few days of rain.
But at different times I have also seen burnt out cars abandoned among the bushes, snakes slithering away, used needles, lost clothing and other things that give the park a darker and more threatening feeling. And at night I am thankful for the comfort and security of home when I look out across the blackness of the park.
